Seats of Power: Pluto’s Challenge to Authority

astrology, Events

As Pluto, Saturn, and the South Node of the Moon approach each other in Capricorn, we look at the compelling story of Power-Over and power within our systems of leadership and authority. We seek to develop personal relationship with these qualities, which some call godds.* The heavens are swirling with potentiality during this transit.

Our Intention: “We dare to cultivate relationship with the planet Pluto—keeper of our shadows and our power— to transform toxic systems of leadership that oppress us.”

In April, Pluto and Saturn will be as close as they get in 2019, before their important conjunction occuring in January 2020. They reach this point while stationing retrograde only five days apart at the end of April. The south node of the Moon, positioned in between Pluto and Saturn adds a karmic, transformational influence. (Don’t worry, we will explain all this and why it is important.)

The exploration begins via Facebook in the weeks leading up to this transit on the Aries New Moon on April 5, and culminates with a webinar on April 28 from 6:00pm CDT – 8:30pm CDT.

With registration, you will receive:

★ Teri’s forecasts for the Aries lunar cycle, which will be centered on our intention
★ Access to a secret Facebook group, where you will be able to reflect on questions around shadow and power
★ Pertinent astrology about Pluto, Saturn, and the nodes of the Moon via group or email
★ Admission to Seats of Power Webinar: part ritual of intention and part teaching about Pluto
★ A video recording of Seats of Power Webinar

For an additional $10, you can purchase a brief, customized analysis of Pluto in your natal chart by Aurora: revealing the nature of your deepest transformations in this lifetime. If interested, please contact Aurora / select “Pluto Analysis” from her drop down menu / include all necessary birth information in message box / add the $10 to your total at checkout. (You must have an accurate birth date, place and time to purchase this option.)

The Art of Reclaiming

Events, Mundane Magic

It has been my experience that most (if not all) people have opinions about Valentines Day. To some, it’s a frantic search for a date and a gift: the pressure to perform when expectations are high. To others, it’s a spotlight on their loneliness or a ploy of Capitalist society to suckle the bank accounts of romantic souls. Whether reservations are made or heads are low, this day carries a charge.

Witches Know that energy is a real thing and use it for channeling purposes to produce desired results: the more potent the charge, the more dynamic the results. There are countless sources of energy, but a common one is holidays and it’s safe to say that there will be many people participating in various types of “ritual” today.

Reclaiming witches recognize and honor the power of names/sacred days/life on this planet that is often taken for granted. This is the reason we call ourselves “witches”: there is a charge to this word that ranges from “scary, old, green hag” to “wise woman with plant-knowledge” to “the devil who will rid your body of an unwanted child” to “a person that will do the forbidden.” We reclaim the word “witch” for it contains a rich legacy of Wisdom and doing what Must Be Done. In calling that word ours, we give back to it with our thoughts and actions: knowing that both are enriched by the energetic current also known as “meaning.”

I believe that we have the right to reclaim words from toxic roots, so long as we have true knowledge of the source, integrity supporting our intention of its use and full awareness of the communities that have been impacted by said word (and whether or not it’s ours to claim.) I also believe that Valentines Day is an opportunity to practice the Art of Reclaiming: from consumerism, from gas-lighting and guilt-trips, from sexual violence as well as from hopelessness.

This tradition began during the Roman Empire when marriage was banned by Emperor Claudius II because he believed it made soldiers reluctant to leave for battle. A priest known as Saint Valentine married couples in secret and was later put to death for violating this law, though the lore reveals that he valued empathy and connection more than domination and obedience… An act, some might say, of True Love.

A wise witch once said “Don’t deny the gift just because you don’t like the package it came in.” There is an allegory present in Valentines Day, and humans have been feeding energy into it for centuries. While there is use in creating new words and philosophies to represent something important, why not use something that is already available? Does Valentines Day (or a pre-planned, widely known occasion to dedicated to expressing Love) deserve to remain hijacked by consumer culture or a bitter attitude?

So today, I challenge the willing: tap into the currents of love in whatever way feels right to you. Maybe it’s choosing to cook a nice meal for a beloved. Maybe it’s being clear with an employer about what you need as an act of self-care. Maybe it’s scheduling time to have coffee with a friend you haven’t seen in a while. Maybe it’s something that isn’t listed here, but feels right for this day. Regardless of what it is (as long as there is consent if another person is involved!) I hope everyone chooses to have a wonderful Valentines Day. I know that’s my intention.

Aurora the Astrologer

astrology, Updates

“Astrology is just a finger pointing at reality.”

Steven Forrest

Some things take time –  a lesson from The Stars that has been giving me a sharp poking as of late. I believe that this Truth is a gift from Saturn (ie: the One who shapes realities) for two reasons:

The first, is that while I have been a student of astrology for over five years (fifteen if you count reading horoscopes with my afternoon snack) I still do not feel like an expert. However, Time can be a powerful ally that shapes the novice of any craft into a master; and years of working with the tarot has proven this to me.

I have read countless books about putting astrology into practice, completed workbooks on the subject, participated in a mentor ship with professional astrologer Teri Parsley Starnes of Starsdance Astrology, earned a certification through Astrology University, performed chart readings for close friends, engaged in spell Work based on transits and co-facilitated Reclaiming-style workshops on the magic of Astrology.

It is true to say that while it may not feel like it, Time has allowed all of those experiences over the last half-decade to mold me into an experienced Astrologer. Those years count, and I would not be where I am now without that patience and dedication.

The second truth is that while much time has passed, achieving my dream of becoming a full-time professional astrologer is not an over-night process. Time has standards for evolution: and it’s the hours of the day that serve as laps around the pool of Substance. These cycles are necessary to the manifestation of that dream if I am willing to fully commit myself to it.

So far, I have spent my time in 2019: starting a business plan, setting intentions, reading new books, preparing for media updates, researching strategies, seeking advice from other freelance professionals, learning the appropriate computer programs and practicing reading Natal Charts as often as I can.

While I usually have great luck generating positive results with just a few hours of time, this year has already proven that becoming a successful business owner requires more effort. More long-term stamina. More laps in that pool… supported and guided by Time.

You may notice some website changes in the coming months. You may also read posts about my progress. You will certainly be updated when I am ready to offer Astrology readings, more collaborative workshops on Astrology Magic and other things that I cannot be aware of yet that only Time can reveal.

I am dedicated to becoming an honest, accurate, compassionate Messenger of the Stars. Until then, I will allow the reminder above from Saturn that some things take time to ground and comfort me as I engage in this Work.

Good thing inspiration is free of charge and ever-available whenever darkness surrounds me…

Elements of Magic: The Art of Alchemy

Events, ReclaimingPGH

Mainstream society has become intrigued by witchcraft in recent years. The increase of popularity in crystals, spells, and books on the Craft are signs that we as a collective are ready for a more personalized spirituality. The choice to create change made empowered practitioners is important now more than ever in this time of social upheaval and climate change, but how does one start? Where can the curious discover what they believe and what works for them in the realm of witchcraft? Who are the witches doing this Work with integrity and without ego-driven agendas?

While there are many varied answers to these questions, my answer is: right here in Pittsburgh, this January for Elements of Magic: The Art of Alchemy workshop!

41598680_1897893893611042_9018511275180687360_n

These three fun, knowledgeable, experienced witches of Reclaiming Pittsburgh will host a beginner- friendly weekend intensive that reveals how Reclaiming priestesses do magic. All levels of experience are welcome, as the framework allows space for newer witches to learn the basics and experienced witches of Reclaiming and other traditions to bring fresh life to their own personal practices.

From the event description:

Elements of Magic is a Reclaiming core class that explores the elemental Pentacle through a Reclaiming ritual structure. We will use art and ritual to discover and begin a personal transformative experience with tools often used in the Reclaiming tradition such as visualization, sensing energy movement, divination, music, trance, creating magical space, and ritual design. This class is experiential in nature.

The cost of this event is a sliding scale of $100 to $200, to be chosen by each participant without question or judgement from facilitators. There are also two “work -study” positions available where those who are not able to pay the minimum amount on the scale may attend the workshop as long as they are willing to help facilitators maintain the space during the weekend. A reduced fee is also available for people of color and/or indigenous people our of respect for minorities.

Space is limited and the deadline to register is quickly approaching on December 30th. To find out more information about this event, visit the Facebook event page. Will you join them in nourishing the foundations of a magical practice?

Thanksgiving is a Lie

Mundane Magic

46516895_117454555867986_375028001596768256_n

Today, as many white people celebrate the colonial Thanksgiving, I am choosing to dedicate the center of my table to the native tribes whose land we stole.

Today, our home cooked meal centers the memories of the Osage tribe and Haudenosauneega Confederacy, who were violently removed from their lands: murdered by my greedy ancestors with narrow minds and cold hearts.

Today, I refuse to participate in any narrative about a “Thanksgiving™” that supports the belief that pilgrims were peaceful or that this day is anything other than white-washing the truth.

Today, I acknowledge my privilege, which has allowed me the luxury of forgetting the real history of the United States for most of my life.

Today, I mourn for those who died on foot at gun point as they were forced to “relocate.”

Today, I commit to saying their names aloud, learning their correct pronunciation and participating in this dark conversation with family members who may wonder why we have invited these names and bones to dinner.

Today, I choose what ancestor I am becoming by serving the memory of these tribes as we raise our glasses at this table and express gratitude for the animals and crops that gave their lives for us to live.

What are you doing today?

Reviews:

‘Animal You’ll Surely Become is an honest, intimate, and unwaveringly compassionate look at our human vulnerability, especially the young, the disenfranchised, the addicted, and the innocent. These fierce essays sting, then sing. Brittany Hailer is a writer to watch, that’s for sure.’ – Dinty W. Moore, author of Between Panic & Desire

‘Animal You’ll Surely Become is a courageous and confident debut that juggles sorrow and fear, rage and love, hurt and triumph, all while balanced on an umbilical highwire tethered between memory and the moon. After reading this book, you will never see cherry blossoms or a tortoise shell or a collarbone or a wine bottle or a pile of clothes in the same way again. Angela Carter, Kate Bernheimer, and Lidia Yuknavitch fans, you heard it here first: Brittany Hailer is a writer to watch.’ —Molly Gaudry, author of We Take Me Apart and Desire: A Haunting

‘Animal You’ll Surely Become is a brutal and lyric shape-shifter of a book. It reinvents itself with each chapter, always turning on the reader. This book is an animal who is smart and soft, intuitive and vicious. It is a hybrid-myth of a beast with three faces pointing backwards, forwards, and most importantly: straight ahead, daring its reader, its prey, to blink. Hailer debuts with a lush and dirty book that is as adventurous as it is ambitious, and as I read it, I couldn’t look away.’ -Sarah Shotland, Author of Junkette
