Queer Craft Market 2019

Art, Events, Jewelry, Services

It’s been a long time since I opened myself up to the idea of vending at craft markets again. Tendonitis crushed my spirits a few years ago, as well as my ability to produce enough goods necessary to cover tables costs. Markets are a wonderful way to meet new people, connect with other craftivists and financially support my art endeavors, but concerns in the community have been raised about accessibility to those who may not be able to afford a spot.

However, the Queer Craft Market hosted at Ace Hotel by Assemble and WorkshopPGH has compassionately and Justly considered these issues: accepting all applicants and making table costs accessible to all who are looking to join the fun. I am proud to announce that I will be back at the booths as a vendor at this year’s Queer Craft Market!

From the event page:

The Queer Craft Market has been a community event for many years and taken on by several organizations. In 2016-2018 the Market was organized by Assemble, a fantastic non profit that supports STEM & maker education. In 2019, Workshop PGH DIY school began organizing the show to help expand the event to include more makers & community organizations. This event is a staple of the Pittsburgh queer community and is inclusive to all.

WHO.
We welcome:

Artists
Makers
Zine Makers
Creatives
Community Organizations
DIY schools & organizations that support the queer arts, handmade & Creatives
This event is all about the makers & folks involved, giving them a platform to sell and show their work. You can learn more about the vendors on the Vendor page as we update it.

It’s organized on a volunteer basis by Kelly of Workshop PGH (ally business & inclusive space) and several nice volunteers with support from Assemble, sponsors & the community.

WHEN.
The Market happens twice a year in Summer before Pride and Winter at rotating locations. In 2019, Ace Hotel Pittsburgh is gracious enough to host our event and is a Queer friendly event space and Employer. Thanks Ace!

I will be there, vending all sorts of witchy goodies (amount will vary based upon my physical ability to produce them):

★ Hand-burned, ethically sourced acorn runes
★ Upcycled jewelry: complete with semi-precious stones with metaphysical properties* combined with old charms and chains
★ Intuitive collage prints from my Book of Shadows
★ Holiday talisman keychains
Concept photography prints for personal reflection and cultivating intuition

Vending is a really fun experience. I love watching bewildered, intrigued eyes scanning my stock and finding themselves delighted by what they find. Each sale is a bright reminder that I am not the only one who wants to adorn themselves with Nature’s Wonders, but it’s really the conversation that I’m there for.

I can remember my days as a maiden witch and how vulnerable it was for me to ask about this tradition that was once violently kept quiet. I would have loved the opportunity to chat with a friendly face about what witchcraft is all about.

This will be the cherry atop my magical year: will it be yours too?

I hope to see y’all there!

*UPG: items with metaphysical properties are derived by Unverified Personal Gnosis.

ReclaimingPGH Priestess and longtime Reclaiming practitioner Amoret BriarRose has put out a call for all interested pagans to create an Earth Church here in Pittsburgh. Originally started by Willow Kelly in Staunton, Virginia, Amoret hopes to initiate this weekly spiritual offering locally with volunteers who would also be willing to help organize and facilitate. Read on for further details!

The premise is really simple:

– Hold Earth Church meetings every Sunday from Samhain to Beltane
– Meetings are 1 hour – 1 1/2 hours in length
– Each meeting has a simple format: Gathering, Round of Names and Pronouns, Short Check-In, Facilitator’s Offering

The way that Willow found it worked best and was the least heavy lift on any one person was:

1. Those that are interested meet up around Fall Equinox; five leaders are picked for the cycle.

2. Each leader gets a Sunday for the Samhain-Beltane cycle: one person is responsible for all first Sundays, one person is responsible for all second Sundays, etc.

3. To be the “leader” for a Sunday means you either a) find someone to be a facilitator or teacher for those Sundays or b) you are the facilitator or teacher on those Sundays, with the goal of bringing a variety of spiritual practices/artistic practices/body modalities/etc. from the region to Earth Church.

4. We all get to show up and have magico-religious experiences!

Some ideas for Earth Church activities:
– Trance
– Yoga
– Art/collage/drawing/painting
– Drumming
– Tai chi
– Sound baths
– Buddhist meditation
– Chanting
– Visiting the rivers
– Dance temple

Waving the Wand

Art, Events, Jewelry, Mundane Magic, Tarot

It takes a bold soul to pick up a wand. To hold something that is pulsing with power, that fits perfectly in your hand and feels like an extension of who we are and what we are meant to do…. but does not come with a manual. There are no definite answers when we ask “how do you use this thing?” Just a feeling  of connection. Invigoration. A rush of energy that serves as an invitation to do something big that we cannot even understand yet.

ace-of-wands

The Universe offers us wands of potential all of the time. They might not take the form of a wooden stick (although some do) it could be a crowd cheering us on before we go on stage. A phone call from someone we did not expect…. Wands make themselves known as tools that will help us transform ourselves and the world around us. It may not be our eyes that identify them, but our hearts being lit on fire. For me this year, it has been the deep Desire to create obscure beauty and share it with the world.

I do not have absolute certainty on my side. I have not been given a road map of where I need to go or the specifics of what I need to do. I just follow the hope-fire and continue to take risks. I do this even when I am afraid or not feeling full of confidence. I observe my situation, take a moment and make the next best decision that I can considering the circumstances.

What I do know is that I love to conjure things that do not yet exist in this world. I know how to pick our the supplies that draw my attention and use my gifts to make things that others may enjoy. When I hear a song that someone else has composed or read someone else’s poem that does more to reveal a mystery than create one, I feel a connection to a deeper part of myself. I am moved and made more open. I am so grateful to all of the artists and rebels that put so much work into their craft. I, too, am one of those people and it is now time to give back.

My work as jeweler, paper artist, photographer and tool-maker is now available on Etsy. Metaphysical jewelry, intuitive collages, divinely inspired magical tools, occult photography that serves as a way to dissect your psyche and much more can be found here, as well as many other creations that are on the verge of manifestation.

I wave my wand and grace is born. What are you creating in the world around you?

Feeling Connection

Art, Mundane Magic

Lately, I have realized how happy I am with my personal practice.

I used to scour the internet and books for a routine. I also relentlessly asked my spiritual friends, yogis and mentors what I “should be doing” to connect to my inner-most Self. I rarely asked myself these questions.

These people have it together I thought. What they are doing is clearly working.
That’s what I should be doing.

When I was told that writing in a journal about emotions can be a really useful way to experience them, I gave it a shot. Over time though, I realized that I’m a very verbal person…. I often use my mind to escape feeling things. Writing was intellectualizing what I felt and was therefore useless in this specific endeavor. This was a frustrating realization and the level of irritation I felt only reinforced just how badly I needed this outlet.

I took several things into consideration while tweaking this exercise. I decided that this practice needed to: be convenient enough to do on a whim, access my creative self, not take long to accomplish, and be something that I enjoy doing.

Collage was the answer. My collection of literary magazines, old college text books, National Geographics, art collections and children’s books served a turbo-charged source of inspiration. I find so much of the life I experience between those pages. Slicing them apart and piecing them together in a way that *feels* right has allowed me to match the emotion that I feel in the moment. The amazing thing about this process is that I am able to drop right back into that heart-space when I look back through old work.

The following is a peek into my Book of Shadows: the mirror of my Soul.

A pocket of this blog will be dedicated to this Work. Some collages might eventually have some written context, some might not. Some of them may “make sense,” others might be totally bizarre. I love this Work because there is no right or wrong way to do it. The intention is to practice pure, unfiltered feeling.

How do you connect with your emotional Self?
